Special Note: To meet our mission statement, K-9 PALS needs volunteers for so many purposes, but fundraising and coordinating outreach activities are critical to meeting our goals.

Foster Care. K-9 PALS Volunteers can participate in fostering dogs in their homes. You will need to complete the foster requirements for the partnering shelter or animal rescue group and be approved to help care for puppies, sick dogs, or dogs that would benefit from behavior training and socialization in a home environment.

ANIMAL SHELTER VOLUNTEERING

K-9 PALS Volunteers who want to additionally volunteer in a local shelter to work hands-on with the shelter dogs will need to complete requirements specifically for the shelter of their choice.

Commmunity events for Shelter and rescue group dogs. K-9 PALS Volunteers who are trained to work with the dogs from the respective shelter or rescue group will be able to take adoptable dogs to community events such as K-9 PALS fundraisers, adoption events, outreach events, responsible pet education events, and off site day trips around the community. K-9 PALS provides additional opportunities for our volunteers to learn from dog behavior trainers in the commmunity.

Open Paw Training Program
K-9 PALS volunteers have an opportunity to be trained by our K-9 PALS dog behavior trainer, Andrea Bratt Frick, so that they can practice the Open Paw Four-level training that teaches dogs to feel comfortable in the shelter environment and to enjoy the company of people.

Volunteers learn to teach dogs basic manners, such as COME, SIT, DOWN and LEAVE IT. Volunteers also are shown how to teach dogs to present themselves in the most impressive way to potential adopters so that they can find happy new homes-and stay in those happy homes!
